The American Medical Association approved a new CPT Category III code for the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) by a physician or other qualified health care provider effective July 1, 2023. SDF is a topical medicament use to arrest caries lesions (early tooth decay). This is an off-label use of SDF but it is approved by FDA to manage tooth sensitivity. It is a low cost and simply caries management tool that can potentially remineralize tooth to avoid costly and painful dental treatments if used early in the decay process.

Investigators at the Medical University of South Carolina, as well as the SC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (SCAAP), and the NC Pediatrics Society (NCPS), are interested in hearing from pediatricians about oral health and potential use of SDF in their practices. We respectfully ask you answer a 16 question survey, which should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete. The survey is anonymous and voluntary but you have the opportunity to include your information if you would like to learn more about SDF or participate in future training opportunities that strengthen your team’s oral health interprofessional practice.

The specific objectives of the survey are to assess the following four aspects of SDF use by pediatricians:

  • Perceived in practice
  • Knowledge of SDF; Clinical indication
  • Willingness to use it in the practice of its use
  • Interest in obtaining training; how would you go about seeking CE

Thank you for taking the time to share your insights. A report will be generated and presented to SCAAP and NCPS for educational and advocacy uses, as well as paper for publication in a peer reviewed journal. Any questions about the survey should be directed to:
