Health and Wellness Program
Office of Student Engagement
Division of Education Innovation and Student Life
Program Overview
The Health and Wellness Program was created to address food and personal wellness insecurity concerns experienced by MUSC students. Acknowledging that food and personal wellness insecurity is a spectrum, the Health and Wellness Program is accessible to all students at MUSC. Students needing assistance will complete the online request form via the Student Assistance Portal on the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) website. The Executive Director of OSE will make contact with students, walk them through the remainder of the intake process, and provide students with a gift card from one of our vendors. The gift cards vary in amount and will be distributed based on each student's needs and circumstances.
Eligibility
Students requesting assistance must be currently enrolled at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Privacy Statement
Recognizing the seriousness and sensitivity often associated with food and personal wellness insecurity, participation in the Health and Wellness Program will be kept private to the extent possible. Only staff members responsible for coordinating the program will have access to student information. Student participation in the program will not be shared with the student's college unless authorized by the student.
Assistance Amount
Students may request up to $500 in assistance over the course of a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) and can receive no more than $1,000 in assistance during their time at MUSC. A student can submit one or multiple requests throughout a year, but their total approved assistance for any given year will not exceed $500.
Procedures
Request Assistance: To participate in the Health and Wellness Program, students must submit a request form on the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) website via the "Student Assistance Portal." Click the portal link, select "Food/Personal Wellness Assistance," and complete the intake information. The request form will be sent to the Executive Director of Student Engagement and the OSE Administrative Coordinator.
Follow-up Meeting: The Executive Director will make contact with students (by phone or virtually) to explain the program in further detail and walk students through the rest of the process. During this meeting, the Executive Director will also make a decision regarding the students' requests and confirm the amount of assistance that will be provided.
Gift Card Disbursement: Once the request is approved, students will arrange a time to pick up and sign for their gift card with the Administrative Coordinator. All cards will be picked up from the OSE office located in the Harper Student Center (45 Courtenay Drive).
Prohibited Items: Students are prohibited from purchasing alcohol and tobacco products with their Food Assistance gift card. Students who violate this restriction will not be allowed to participate in the program in the future.
Documentation: Students participating in the program are required to submit an electronic copy of their itemized receipt to the Administrative Coordinator within a week after their shopping trip. Students who fail to submit receipts in a timely manner will be prohibited from future program participation.
